Plitvice Lakes National Park – Day 2

Before I get into Day 2…

Let it be known that we could easily spend a WEEK in this park but we do not have the time so here is Day 2…

Don’t forget to check out my recap of Day 1 by clicking here.

Veliki Slap (aka the Large Waterfall) – Take 2

We started Day 2 with coffee and a pastry outside of Entrance 1.  We were curious how Veliki Slap aka the big waterfall) would look in morning sunlight so we started at the overlook to see.  Here is the pic from the overlook where you can see the unfortunate shade.  (We were thinking maybe we have to come another time of year in the morning for ideal lighting.)

I walked a little to the one side of the over look and zoomed in on those falls in front and to the left of the big waterfall:

We hiked again to the bottom and across to see Veliki Slap from the bottom.

Here is a nicer pic of Veliki Slap from about 100m from the overlook (I think this angle is better considering the morning sun):

Here’s another pic of the beautiful turquoise water with the boardwalk we took to cross to the other side of the canyon:

Finally, here is the bottom of Veliki Falls.  That’s Bill in the lower left (for scale) taking his own pic of the falls:

Upper Lakes Area

After seeing Veliki Slap for the second time, we headed toward the South end of the park which is called the upper lakes area.

The two big takeaways of the upper lakes area are:

  1. Beautiful turquoise water
  2. Tons of smaller but still beautiful water falls

Turquoise Lakes

Here are some pics of the beautiful water in the morning light when we were walking along at water level:

Here are some pics of turquoise water from above along the rim of the canyon:

Here’s a pic from the top that proves I was there – haha!

Myriad of Waterfalls

Here are some of my favorite waterfalls we saw in or on our way to the upper lakes area:

And these were my absolute favorite little waterfalls.  They ran along the boardwalk and there had to be at least a 100 different little waterfalls.  I kept thinking it looked like something people would build as some impressive landscaping and water feature but this was totally natural and SO cool:

After-party Hike

After we left the park to go back to our car, we took a detour and went on a little hike for mushrooms and caves.

We may or may not have smuggled a huge mushroom back to our apartment to make tea.

It was kind of cool hiking around next to the parking lot which is really close to the border of Bosnia and Croatia.  Again, I was a little concerned about stepping on an undetonated land mine but perhaps I’m too paranoid.

Here’s a pic from that little detour hike we did on our way back to the car.  Notice the cool limestone outcrops:

Well, I think that wraps it up for this park.  I hope you enjoyed the two part recap!! 🙂
